I need to learn to speak Spanish for work. I took a few years in high school, but was never fluent. I would prefer something either free or very cheap. I will not be reimbursed for the cost.

Hello, I have been trying a program that will read text in Spanish. Try using TypeIt ReaIt (Text-To-Speech) with a Spanish voice. The computer can read text back to you and help you with pronunciation. Just type or copy/paste into it and press the speech button. It can save to a sound file too, so you can listen to your Spanish documents on your iPod. It has a Spanish spell checker and works on Windows and Mac. The program is freeware but the sad thing is that does not come with any Spanish voices. The voices must be purchased from a company that makes them. There is a link on the program's website to some voices that will speak in Spanish. The voices and can be tried out for free but will nag you to be bought for $30. TypeIt ReadIt can be downloaded for free from http://www.schoolfreeware.com and its video tutorials can be found at:

Well, right now I am using www.licketysplitspanish.com and learning a some of the basic concepts. It's twelve lessons, and this might be good for you as a brush up. It brings into play the basics...greetings, prepositions, verbs and verb tense...it's actually been more helpful to me, even as a beginner, than a lot of the immersion CDs I've bought because rather than just learning what to say, you learn the proper spelling, and why it is that way. It's twelve lessons...one each day. When I get each lesson, I copy and paste it to a Word document and then print it so that I have it to review throughout the day.
I haven't tried LiveMocha.com, but this may also be good for you. I plan to use it once I feel a bit more comfortable with grammar, accents, spelling, etc. It's a free service where you can learn several different languages...and gives you practice by allowing you to speak with native speakers.
I found these on a Google search for "free online Spanish lessons". Of course, not all of them will be free...but many are. So, you might want to start your search that way.
As for cost, you could try buying some old, used text books and other materials for fairly cheap. I used Barnes and Noble online and found over $450.00 worth of books, CD's and learning materials for less than $60. And definitely buy a English/Spanish dictionary if you don't have one from high school (they can be found for no more than $5 new almost anywhere...even some dollar stores carry the "good" ones for $1).
