People get different meanings from everything. To me, the pigs symbolize the turning point in Ralph's relationship with Jack. Because Jack went to hunt the pigs, the fire went out and the ship passed by, causing them to loose their first chance of being saved. Ralph was no longer able to completely trust Jack, because Jack had let him down. The fire was the only thing that would be able to save them, not the pig. They could have lived off fruit.
The littlun with the birthmark on his face symbolized how society can be careless. Society often cuts down others while trying to achieve their own goals. While they attempt to accomplish what they want, others pay the price.
The whole book is about the complexity of the structure of society. Society can crumble so easily, and man can quickly turn to their natural barbaric ways of surviving. It also shows have conformative most people are, and how easily their thoughts are swayed. Jack quickly turned the others against Ralph. The others eagerly dropped their loyalty with Ralph and followed Jack, because Jack was able to convince them Ralph was no good. I could go into a much more detailed symbolic analysis, but I think I shall stop here.
