i have a 5th generation 30gb ipod but my battery is messed up and won't hold a charge. I am looking for a replacement battery on the internet but all of the replacement batteries are 3.7v 550 or 580mAh. But the real ipod battery is 3.7v 400 mAh. I want to know if the 550 mAh or the 580mAh is safe and won't burn up my ipod. Thanks

mAh stands for milliamp-hours. That's another unit for electrical charge (or basically how many ions the battery can hold). A 400 mAh battery will last for 400 hours when used in an electronic device that uses one milliamp of power, or 24 minutes (0.4 hours) in an electronic device that uses one amp (1000 milliamps) of power. (Watts = Volts x Amps, or Volts x Milliamps x 1000)
So a 580 mAh battery in theory should last 580/400 times as long as the 400 mAh battery, or 45% longer.
In the case of a fixed electronic device like your iPod, the only number that really matters is the voltage. They're both 3.7 volts, so you should be good (as long as the 580 mAh battery fits in your iPod)

your iPod will only draw/use the current required.
Do not exceed the voltage, in this case, 3.7V, but you can replace the 400mAH battery with a 580mAH if the case allows for the larger battery to physically fit.
You will gain operational time.
Since the device uses only the amount of current required, and you are providing more capacity at the same voltage, this means that you will be able to operate about 40% longer between recharges.
If the new battery fits, go for it!!!
