Why is my acceleration sluggish? - 1998 Honda Civic EX Coupe, AT, 1.6 Liter, 4 Cylinder V-Tech?
More than often, I see problems with the acceleration of my 1998 Honda Civic.
It has a new fuel filter. It has a new air filter. It has up to date oil changes. It has up to date transmission flush. It has brand new double platinum spark plugs. I have used SeaFoam cleaner both a little in the oil, and most in the gas. I have level coolant.
I almost changed the thermostat.
What are some possible reasons for this sluggishness? There are no check engine errors. There is 1 reason I I think that maybe the computer has something to do with it. My left blinker is going crazy. Sometimes its real slow with quick pulses, sometimes its really fast pulses.

If you can't answer me with a good answer, you are lame, stupid and condescending like the 3 first people who answered. This car was made to race. I don't care what anybody says, this thing ran like a dream a month ago, and still does from time to time. I started having radiator hose leak problems, then the sluggish problem stopped. Now its back again. WTF do I do? Answer me like you have a brain stem.

I would say the power problem is also causing a weak engine spark and lowered engine power.
Does it rev slower then normal?
Does the transmission do anything funny?
Also the blinker check the rear light relay and fuse check the bulb and change it. Check the wiring to the bulb is it lose corroded pulled apart. If the plugs wernt gaped correctly that will kill engine response and power.
First of all, check the electrical connections and bulbs in all of your lights. As for the decrease in acceleration. On the engine side of it.Could be injectors, a bad spray pattern makes for a poor burn. Also, poor valve seating and therefore bad compression. Those should make your mpg decrease as well. Wearing rings for bad compression, which would burn oil. Check your water pump since you had the leak. If the water pump is bad it coud drain alot of power to make it spin( not likley without you already knowing though) On the transmission side of it. Old seals not holding pressure as well. Old torque converter, allows fluid to slip by requiring more power from engine to move. Even with atf flush you still have an internal filter which will clog to some extent (that is what it is designed for) when that happens it impedes the hydraulic flow. Also your tranny has individual clutches for its gears that could be worn (again, not a matter of mainenance, just age) that would mean that it takes more hydraulic flow and more time to lock up, requiring more power. Last but certainly not least try putting the best gas you can find in it (after running it nearly empty). Bad gas makes for bad preformance. I think that your other problems are purley coincidental.
I own a 97 Ex I know wat u talking bout 1st of yes change ur thermostat it probably burnt the seal off mine did i blew every radiator hose in it 2nd make sure or change ur water pump and timing belt 3rd if its only when its cold its a sensor thats wat mine is my mechanic said its the map n idle sensor but im to lazy to buy them n change them lol 3rd make sure ur radiator is not crakked or leaking fluid after u said n done all that get a tune up Mobil 1 I was running royal purple but to expensive n u lose power after like 1500 miles so get mobil 1 oil n there oil filter fuel filter NGK V-Power Spark Pluggs Lifetime Plug wires thats should help out if not then it might b sum mechanical or electronics (sensor etc) problem but that should do it give it a new over haul never said how many miles it had but im taking more than 100,000 so do all that ill b ur money worth ull waist around 500-1000 depending where u go I say Advance if theres any near U they have 5Q & oil filter (mobil 1)for 30 bucks get also fuel injector cleaner gas treatment n summ of that add them b4 u get gas Hope it helps sorry tried ansewring ur other 1 but couldnt bout ur left blinker ur taillight might b going out
