1 How old are you? How old were you when you started breaking out? I’m 17, and I’ve never had a breakout. *Knocks on wood*
2 Is your skin always clear, do you get zits sometimes, or do you almost always have a breakout? I’ve been fortunate to always have very clear skin.
3 What face wash do you use? How often?Where do you buy it? I wash my face with Desert Essence Thoroughly Clean Face Wash with Organic Tea Tree Oil in the morning and at night. You can find it at Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods or at: http://www.veganstore.com/index.html?stocknumber=006 I also wear SPF 30 every day.
4 Do you use face masks or scrubs or anything? What kind? How often? I use Earth Science Gentle Apricot Scrub twice a week, and Ecco Bella’s Dark Chocolate Face Mask once a week. You can also find both of them at Whole Foods or at: http://www.veganstore.com/084.html and http://www.eccobella.com/product_info.php?cPath=22&products_id=71
5 What brand make up do you wear? What do you wear (foundation, concealor?, ect) I rarely wear makeup, but when I’m getting glammed up I use Urban Decay’s vegan Surreal Skin Mineral Makeup and concealor, eyeshadow, blush and mascara and lipgloss. http://www.urbandecay.com/vegan.cfm
6 How much makeup do you wear? Except for special events, I never wear makeup during the week. I just can’t be bothered with it in the morning.
7 What spot treatments do you use? I’ve never had the need to use one, but concentrated tea tree oil is supposed to be an excellent treatment. I've heard the ProActive is too harsh.
8 Do you eat junk food or healthy? I am a vegan and strive to eat very healthily. I eat antioxidant-rich fruit like blueberries, strawberries, rasberries or blackberries and have pomegranate juice every day. I also avoid greasy and processed food. Most importantly, I drink tons of water throughout the day which flushes out toxins and helps to keep my skin clear.
One of my best friend’s dad is an acclaimed dermatologist, and he said that dairy is a leading culprit for acne in many people, and especially in girls and women, because of the hormones in them (cows have hormones too) that overstimulates human oil producing glands. If you consume a lot of dairy, you might want to start cutting back and eventually eliminating it for a while and see what happens. Personally, I think Organic Vanilla Soy Milk tastes much better than dairy milk anyway, and there are many soy cheeses and yogurt. He also said that a common mistake many people make is overwashing their face or using products that are too harsh; both will strip your face of the oil it needs and force your glands to then produce more to compensate. It’s best to use a gentle daily face wash (Cetaphil, Purpose, Kiehls, and Desert Essence all are great) and pat your face dry (don’t rub) with a clean washcloth. Only use a face scrub a couple times a week, and a mask just once a week or so. If you regularly wear makeup, wash your brushes and sponges frequently. Also carry antibacterial handwipes in your bag and wipe off your phone if you hold it up to your face rather than using your Bluetooth. Wash your sheets at least once a week, your pillow case twice a week if possible. Use fragrance-free detergent for sensitive skin.
Most importantly, keep your chin up. Nothing is more beautiful than confidence. : )
1 How old are you? How old were you when you started breaking out?
I'm 18 now. I started breaking out when I was 16. Never really had much acne before then.
2 Is your skin always clear, do you get spots sometimes, or do you almost always have a breakout?
I get pimples near my period. I usually get one of two somewhere around my mouth, and maybe the odd one around my forehead. They usually clear up once my period's done though.
3 What face wash do you use?
Clean and Clear Morning Burst (the purifying one in the blue bottle).
4 Do you use face masks or scrubs or anything? What kind?
I use St. Ives products for this. I use their clay firming mask at night (sometimes I skip it, but I try to do it quite a few nights a week). I also use their Apricot scrub once or twice a week.
5 What brand make up do you wear? What do you wear (foundation, concealor?, ect)
Just drug store brands. I like Maybelline and Cover Girl products. I change the brand I use frequently because I'm looking for the best product for my skin (most of the best products I've used are Cover Girl).
6 How much makeup do you wear?
Usually just concealer, foundation, and a bit of mascara. Sometimes some eyeshadow too.
7 What spot treatments do you use?
Clean and Clear Persa-Gel 5. I put that on any pimples before I go to bed.
8 Do you eat junk food or healthy?
I eat both healthy foods and junk food. Probably a bit too much junk food, but oh well.
1. How old are you? How old were you when you started breaking out? I'm 14 and I started "breaking out" when I was 12, although my acne has never really been that bad. 2 Is your skin always clear, do you get spots sometimes, or do you almost always have a breakout? My skin is clear about 70/80% of the time I would say. Most of my acne is hormonal so it comes and goes with my period. 3 What face wash do you use? Neutrogena invigorating deep clean 4 Do you use face masks or scrubs or anything? What kind? I use St. Ives Apricot Scrub about once every other week. 5 What brand make up do you wear? What do you wear (foundation, concealer?, ect) Covergirl 6 How much makeup do you wear? Not that much. Concealer on my zits whenever I have them and a little foundation, blush and mascara. 7 What spot treatments do you use? Hmmm well my mom has this amazing medicated, prescribed acne stuff but she doesn't usually let me use it that often and I don't know what it is, sorry. Toothpaste my zits overnight usually reduces them a lot. 8 Do you eat junk food or healthy? A mixture of both. I could probably do better =/
If your acne is really bothering you I suggest that you go to a Dermatologist. They will really be able to help you out a LOT and prescribe stuff for your skin that will clear it up in no time. They will also be able to tell you certain foods to avoid. I think mine said to avoid chocolate, nuts and any greasy/fried food as much as possible. I know *sigh* it's hard, but it did help me a bit. Be gentle with your skin, don't use so many products that it dries it up. The most helpful thing would be to start a common routine for your skin: clean, Exfoliate, Tone & Moisturize and be patient for it to clear up, it won't all happen overnight. Sometimes, if your like me, it might be hormonal and you could ask your doctor to put you on Birth Control. I know it sounds weird but it helped a lot of my friends. Good luck!
