What is some good Jazz flute music?

I am looking to get some really good Jazz flute music preferably funky. I am new to the genre so I don't know any names. Point me in the right direction. I want it to be funky and really jazz flut-o-licious.

Manu Dibango lies closer to funk than jazz so perhaps you'd like his flute, check out the album African Voodoo.

Also you have the more modern; Jeremy Steig Quartet - 'Flute on the Edge'

Also here's a couple of non-funk jazz recommendations since you said you are new to jazz:

Yusef Lateef - 'Eastern Sounds'
Eric Dolphy. 'Out To Lunch' and 'Out There'
Ron Carter - 'Where' (features Dolphy on flute)

Jazz Flute Music

If you are interested in jazz flute, there are many artists listed by other answers. Two of my favorites are Hubert Laws and Herbie Mann. But Bud Shank is my most favorite, mostly due to song selection. However, one of the most outstanding jazz albums featuring flute lead is by a classical flutist who doesn't record jazz very often! Check out SUITE FOR FLUTE AND JAZZ PIANO TRIO with Jean Claude Rampal on flute and pianist/composer Claude Bolling. The compositions are the very best and give you a chance to hear an excellent flutist at the top of his form! Good listening.
