unable to connect laptop to lcd?

i have a lenovo Y510 laptop and a samsung 40'' lcd tv.i connected it with a vga cable(male-male) but it doesn't work.i tried the graphic properties,the second monitor option etc, but it doesn't work.i try to attach the second monitor and click the box with extend to desktop but when i click apply the first monitor is selected automatically. please help me out

there is a source button on the remote but it works only when there is pc or other component connected.

I don't know about Lenovo in particular, but on some laptops, you have to completely disable the laptop screen (thereby driving all the video to/through the TV) in order for it to work. Make sure that you have selected the correct video channel on the TV as well.

You talk a lot about the laptop but not about the TV. Did you check your TV settings? Are you sure it is VGA and not SVGA? What about your screen resolution? Are you sure you have it set to match your TV's requirements? Also you might want to try using a VGA to S connector.

you probably have to change the input to vga on you tv? try using the tv's remote control and see if there is an input or source button. it's like when a tv has to be on channel 3 for your vcr to work? it may work you can try it :0)
