When two forces act towards each other from opposite sides, rock layers are bent into folds. The process by which folds are formed due to compressional force is known as folding.
Folds are endogenetic processes or processes that shape the land by forces coming from within the earth.
There are 3 main endogenetic processes: folding, faulting and vulcanicity. They take place mainly along the plate boundaries.
Endogenetic processes cause many major landform features.

This is when the edge of one tectonic plate pushes up against another on the same level, and the edge of one gets pushed up. The Rocky Mountains are a good example of this phenomenon.
