Can you offer suggestions on ways to minimize moisture in my tack storage area?

I keep my tack at home and only take to the barn what I am currently using. The rest of my tack (5 saddles and assorted headstalls/reins/breast collars etc) are is stored in my finished basement. My basement is dry, but my tack always seems cool/dampish to the touch.

I know most of you will probably say, buy a dehumidifier, but that's not something I can do right now.

I have my saddles covered over with cotton sheets to keep any dust and dirt off and hopefully absorb moisture.
I try to wash and dry the sheets on a regular basis so that they are as clean as possible. Now with the spring rains, everything down there seems damper than usual.
Any thoughts on this? I just don't have anywhere else to put them.

Try this:

Purchase 2 or 3 large bags of salt.
Place them on the floor of the tack room, and open the tops.
If you can, place a floor-standing fan in the room, and leave it turned on (oscillating).

It works wonders for keeping a tack room dry and mold free!

GOOD LUCK! :)

Good, old fashioned Damp Rid would do the job. You can get in a variety of different sizes and its available in just about any Hardware store/ Home Depot/ Walmart.
Also, if you don't have carpeting down in your basement, you can throw sawdust around your saddle racks and sweep it up and replace it every few days.

Don't laugh, but take toilet paper rolls and set them out around the area. They will absorb the moisture and when you feel them getting damp thru to the core, toss and replace.

Damp-Rid would be the least expensive way to go. You do have to empty them.

The next offering would be to invest in a small dehumidifier.

ok, i'm going to say to invest in a dehumidifier but for now use damprid and a fan to keep the air circulating.
