You think the US was founded as a Christian nation?

I get a lot of hate mail because of my quotes. Particularly the Gandhi quote. Tonight's was the proverbial straw. The email I got told me that I am un-American; I have served in the US military for over 20 years. And, that America was founded as a Christian nation. Well, here a few quotes from our "Founding Fathers".

Lighthouses are more useful than churches. - Benjamin Franklin

This would be the best of all possible worlds, if there were no religion in it - John Adams

Christianity is the most perverted system that ever shone on man - Thomas Jefferson

Now, go back to the original question: You think the US was founded as a Christian nation?

As always, be respectful

Des;
That is true, however, how many times has some religious zealot told you that America is a Christian nation?

No - I know that it was not. The founding fathers specifically rejected the notion of the US being a Christian nation. George Washington himself said so in a number of letters and communications. The founders were aware that the United States was settled by people of many religions and they saw no reason to encourage or repress any of them.

The framers of the Constitution felt so strongly about the secular nature of the United States that the FIRST two clauses of the Bill of Rights specify that Congress cannot make any laws that establish a religion or give it official or quasi-official status, nor can it make laws that prohibit citizens from practicing their religion beliefs (including non-belief) freely. There is no evidence that they intended this to apply only to Christian sects or to protect Christians, nor is there any evidence that they simply assumed that most citizens would be Christian.

People who claim that the US was founded as a Christian nation are simply idiotic and ignorant.

I am really sorry that you've been subjected to that kind of brainless hatred from one of the many US lunatics who claim to love this country and haven't got the faintest notion what it stands for - and who would be only to happy to ditch democracy for a theocracy, as long as they ended up on top.

They're morons. Please try to ignore them.

They make separation of church and state. I think they did for good reason. history shows that religion and politics is an awful mix. If anything what they said and did shows that they don't want this to be a religious country at all.

"The Government of the United States is not in any sense founded upon the Christian Religion." 1797 the treaty of Tripoli, signed by President Washington, and approved by the Senate of the United States

The treaty of tripoli was a carefully worded document that was written not as a Christian but as citizens of a sovereign nation. So as to not make the issue a religious one between Islamic pirates and the Christians who infact were Americans.. Seems to me that even then Americans were careful to not offend the sensibilities of hostile Muslims...

Homeland Security is having to put more and more time and resources into tracking christians who seek to tear up the constitution, destroy democracy and foment a second civil war to install a christian dictatorship!!

A chilling warning has been issued to US police forces about the threat of a rise in violent right wing and christian extremist groups fueled by recession, the return of disgruntled army veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan, and hostility over the election of the first black president!!

Seems these people are not just a bigger threat to American freedoms than external terrorists but completely anti American!!!

Seems you are at odds with the government!!

your name is not McVey is it?!!
