Four key things you need include: warmth, water, food and litter. It's really pretty easy. For warmth, you want to create a brooder, which is essentially a warm box. Textbooks say that the temp should start at 95 degrees and be decreased each week by 5 degrees, but as a practical matter, we've found that placing a light over or next to the box and moving it higher or further each week is fine. A plastic Tupperware with high sides works fine and a lid with cut vents or a piece of window mesh helps keep the warmth in. Chicks will hurt their legs on slippery surfaces, so cover the floor with paper towels - this is the "litter". Finally, you might want to buy a small watered and feeder so that you're not refilling twice a day, but in the interim, plastic Tupperware lids will work. You should buy chick feed, and might want to use the medicated version. We use start and grow brand. Leave food out all the time. Finally, dip the chick's beak in the water so it know where it is.
