Would anyone else like to see the jerks removed from the galleries?
I am not a very good golfer, but I still love to play, and I have been playing and watching since the Palmer days. Watching the Players' Tournament and some other recent matches has me pretty discouraged. Every shot, especially by the big names, is followed instantaneously by screaming drunks shouting inane and trite phrases like "IN THE HOLE!!!" And they are always within 10 feet of whoever is making the shot. They don't care about the skill or the beauty of the course or the effort required to get there. They only care about yelling loud enough so THEY can be heard above and before everyone else.
Everyone wants to have a good time at these events. Nobody minds cheering and enthusiasm. Jack's walk up 18 at Augusta was a classic. But its not the WWF. I think it's beyond obnoxious. It wrecks it for everyone else - even the folks watching on television. I think they should be escorted to the road. No warnings, no second chances, just gone.
Anyone else feel as i do?
Thanks to everyone for a good discussion. Hagrid and Thelau, please try to comprehend that I am not talking about cheering. Cheering is what happened as Tiger's curving chip shot hung on the lip and then dropped at the Master's. And the only excitement this behavior brings to the game is between one drunk and his buddies as they attempt to out-shout each other and laugh about it afterward. It is not exciting to the people around them, regardless of their generation. It is simply offensive. It's exactly like spilling beer on them and then saying "Hey, get over it, old man. Ha Ha!" The entire problem is that they don't care whether it's offensive or not. The attitude is personified by the classic statement "I bet you squeak when you walk, too." Pretty funny.
No harm, no foul? To whom? Do you really think the players don't mind being screamed at the instant they make contact? Do you really think the guy sitting next to you doesn't mind? Does it matter to you?
Andrew, interesting idea. I'm fairly certain it has been considered. Economically, that would be a painful decision. And I enjoy a cold beer as much as anyone. But I do not lose control of my senses. If i ever did, I guess I would expect to be tossed out. These guys would probably sue.
