Wal Mart is the best place to go when you are starting out. Just find out what you need for the fish that you are going to be fishing for and they have a big selection.

Besides the obvious places for the rods and reels, yard sales, estate sales, pawn shops, flea markets, trash bins (I took a few too many minutes at the grocery store the other day and saw someone driving off with the poles I was going to scavenge that I saw on the way up there... don't know what condition they were in, but no harm in taking two minutes to load up a bunch of unwanted gear to sort through at the house... if nothing else you take them to the pawn shop and get a few bucks out of 'em if they're decent). Sometimes lures can be found in these same places, but for more consistent results on bait and lures, bait shops, wal mart, some convienience stores (at least in my area), your yard, the shoreline that you're fishing, etc.
