i am not from florida so i cannot answer about registering a jon boat in florida. you can probably go the the florida wildlife and resource commision web page and find out what kind of boats need to be registered. i am pretty sure if it has any kind of motor is has to be registered. each boat has a preset weight limit when it comes from the factory and depends on the size of the individual boat and should be stamped on it somewhere. if he likes salt water fishing a jon boat is not the right boat for him. i own a 14 jon boat that i use for freshwater fishing in small rivers and lakes. i can fit 3 average size people comfotably in the boat. but if he plans on fishing the freshwater flats a jon boat may be the answer. you can add flooring and decking in the jon boat and pretty much customize it to your needs. but you should inquire more of his preference because a small bass boat maybe your answer. these usually come with an outboard motor and premade casting deck and seats. its all in what he would like and the money you are looking to spend. ill have to agree with the other user, if you purchase a used boat and motor have it tested. i used craigslist to purchase a motor and was pleased with my results. hope this helps you out! good luck!

I would have said any boat with a motor on it. If you were to row your jon boat, then I would say no.
