My daughter and I are newly certified PADI open water divers. We would like to make a trip to Florida in the near future. Can anyone recommend a great and friendly dive site around Miami or within a reasonable driving distance? Please feel free to share your experience.

Florida has great diving. Starting from Ft. Lauderdale area to all the way to Key West, there are many dive sites, many dive operators. Close to Miami - if you go to Key Largo area, you can access the underwater national park. It's great diving there.
I would suggest for you do a little search Dive Florida, or look for diving in a given area, like Key Largo, Key West, Marathon, Islamorada, etc. You will get a lot of choices. Then based on the distance you can plan your stay.
One thing you need to know about Florida Diving, is that the water conditions changes a very quickly. It can get very rough due to wind, there could be stiff currents. Ask the local operators about the water conditions. Florida water in general is much cooler than the Caribbean. Check it out - you should have a lot of fun. Since you are new at this, take your time, relax, use the skills you have learned, and always remember - safety first no compromise. If you are having some problems, let your dive leader, or dive operator know. You may use up air very quickly, don't worry about it - I had the same problem when I was a rookie. It only gets better.
