Who can ever forget the best of the cowboys with John Wayne in
True Grit. He was one of a kind and lit up the scene when he came
on. He had a screen presence that was as big as all outdoors. He
set the tempo for his character actors and was the same man off
screen as he was in real life. A genuine humanitarian, and a true
American. There won't be anyone to fill his shoes. Not even his sons
came close.

That is one of my favorite moments in western movies
The thing that really made that scene work though was the earlier part of the movie where Rooster reminisces about his younger days. The time he was being pursued by a posse. he tells La boeuf or Mattie ,I'm not sure which, how he was exhausted and desperate he turned and charged with the reins in his teeth both guns blazing thinking he would go out fighting.
So when Rooster , faced again by seemingly insurmountable odds, uttered that line then put the reins in his teeth ,charged guns blazing. It was all I could do to restrain myself from jumping up out of my seat and cheering him on.

True Grit was also the film that made me a Robert Duval fan
