What HD TiVo option - std or XL? and related questions?

I'm getting ready to upgrade from my Humax TiVo Series 2 to an HD TiVo, likely through weaKnees so I can get higher capacity (~150 hrs. HD) but I'm debating if there is an real benefit to the THX option over a 'normal' HD TiVo. We will hook it up through our stereo system for playback through our speakers.

Also, we use TimeWarner cable and they seem to indicate they must come and install the cable card(s) - is this really necessary?? And do they have a monthly rental or other cost for the cable card(s)?

The best part about my Humax was the DVD option so I could write off my favorite shows on DVD is I was running out of space and/or to take some on vacation with me so I could watch when I had more free time. Can I 'cob' this with the HD Tivo and a DVD recorder?

Thanks much!

There is no practical benefit to THX approval. it is just certification that it operates withing certain specifications. Th plain TiVo HD likely performs the same, but just hasn't acquired the certification.

Yes, you will need cable cards to get the digital channels with guide data. Them having to install them is just policy many providers have. That is all the hardware you need to rent, at least for now. If some channels are SDV, you will need a Tunin Adapter.

Yes, you can copy from the HD-TiVo to a DVD recorder. You may be blocked with copy protection on some digital channels though.
