i noticed basketball players waring a plastic mask over their noses. i was wondering if any one could shed some light on what its for? i had assumed it was to protect their nose but i really just don't know. thanks in advance.

It is just for if they fracture their nose. It is for protection until the injury heals. But people like Richard Hamilton wear it for good luck because he plays good with it on, for some reason.
It's a protective mask for players that have had a fractured or broken nose.
It's a trademark of Rip Hamilton. After fracturing his nose 4 times in 03-04 he started wearing the mask and eventually kept wearing it after he was 100%. He states it's a "symbol of strength."
Courtney Lee on the Magic wears a masks because he suffered a fractured sinus during this year's playoffs.
NBA players started wearing a protective mask in the 80s. Some WNBA players have worn them too.
