It is just for if they fracture their nose. It is for protection until the injury heals. But people like Richard Hamilton wear it for good luck because he plays good with it on, for some reason.

It's a protective mask for players that have had a fractured or broken nose.

It's a trademark of Rip Hamilton. After fracturing his nose 4 times in 03-04 he started wearing the mask and eventually kept wearing it after he was 100%. He states it's a "symbol of strength."

Courtney Lee on the Magic wears a masks because he suffered a fractured sinus during this year's playoffs.

NBA players started wearing a protective mask in the 80s. Some WNBA players have worn them too.

well I think the masks are just for the nose. The eye part of the mask is open I believe

Many players wear it for there nose, others jaws, some use it even if there not hurt just for a save mind about it.

It functions as both a nose and eye mask, used when someone had had his nose or eye hurt.
