Why is faith considered a good thing?

By definition, faith is a firm belief in something for which there is no proof.
This seems ludicrous to me.
Please spare me bible quotes. If you cannot think for yourself, do no answer.

Faith means making a virtue out of not thinking.

Having Faith in something which you have no proof is ridiculous. You are absolutely right!

There is one more dimension to Faith which could be something like, having Faith in your belief that Blind Faith is not a good thing. It can merely be as simple as having trust in the power of your legs for walking up and down on a ladder.

So when it comes to having Faith in a Deity which also happens to have a religion along with an entourage of customs, ethic, rituals etc. finding the right one or the one which appeals to you becomes crucial.

Because for some people, faith brings them more happiness than anything. It fills a void.

I have faith. It's not in Jesus Christ. My faith is so irrelevant to Jesus or God that I no longer fear hell or wish for heaven. I have faith in Mother Nature, and our home Earth. It's hard to explain without sounding like a lunatic.

I am fourteen, and have a very unique faith. I think about it often, and to me faith is a prompt. It is a base of deep thought. I spend a lot of time just looking at the trees and the sky thinking of why we are here, and how we can change our trashing of the Earth.

Spiritually speaking, it is not a good thing. Not when it interferes with seeking knowledge and enlightenment.

Faith can be good or bad, depending on what one believes in.

Blind faith is especially frightening though.

Its the foundation for doomsday cults and fundamentalism.

To me, faith should be a form of hope. Have faith someone will get better or hope they'll get better.

It should not be used to lower ones IQ and refuse to acknowledge known facts just because they do not agree with their beliefs.
