I just moved into a new apartment which has a nasty old refrigerator in it that does not work. NO the landlord will not take it away. This is the hood down here.
The apartment itself is pretty nice and roomy but I have got to get rid of this thing and I don't really have money to for a mover.

Look in the classified ads for people who do hauling, many of these folks can haul away all sorts of stuff for one price, or a large item for a cheap price. Includes moving it out of your apartment or home. Call around and ask about prices. Or stick a FREE sign on it and stick it out in the hall, it will be gone in a few days, or stick a sign on it, For sale, 50$ and it will be gone in an hour.

Look in you phone book to see if metal collectors, junk men, are listed. They will be glad to pick it up.for free. They take the wiring and copper out of them and the metal will be heavy going on the scales in the junk yard. They sell all of that,\
I am sure you have heard of copper thiefs. Godd money is being given for copper.
If they are not listed, ask around.
Junk men come through our neighbor all the time. They drive pick up trucks and pull trailers. You see washer and dryers and all kinds of metal things on their trailers.

unfortunately refrigerators have to be recycled to get rid of the gas that they work of(Refrigerant). find a local scrap merchant ,but he may not take it,as he wont have equipment to take gas out.
thought it would be up to landlord to supply a new one and remove the old one

If you can't move it yourself, can you fix it up and use it for something? Cover it with contact paper and use it for storage? Your only other option is to bribe some friends with pizza to help you move it out.
edit: the refrigerant is in the compressor. remove the compressor and the rest can be put in the scrap metal heap.
