but the fact is I just haven't had much need for it. How do you unzip or extract a zip or RAR , etc file with a program like 7-Zip and make a working program. Everytime I try it the files appear to extract but then just disappear. Where do they go and how do I put them together (in the absence of a wizard) to make a working piece of software? Thank you

Well as a starting point you should try making sure you specify where the files you are going to extract will be extracted to. Choose your desktop for the easiest way to find them.
It is possible (If you have only been trying to extract one archive) that the archive contains a virus that your anti-virus software is intercepting and preventing from being extracted.
The process of using 7-zip is exceedingly easy. You double click on your .rar file. 7-zip opens. You click on "extract-to" you then browse for a place to put your files, and click ok!
I'd have to guess there has been some sort of human error on your part in one of these steps.
You can also use the windows search function to search for the name of the file that should have been extracted, just in case it was but you're not sure where - the search feature will find it wherever it may have been placed.
It is also possible that the file you are trying to unzip is password protected. 7-zip will tell you if this is the case, however, in some circumstances winRar will not.
Finally, it is possible that the archive you are trying to extract is part of a larger archive that has been split into several .rar files, "This usually happens in the case of a .rar file with the extension of ".r01, .r02, etc,." If this is the case then you need to make sure that:
A.) You have all of the files belonging to the "final archive" B.) You click on the file that begins the extraction process properly, which is the first file; I.e. r.01, or r.00.
Windows XP has a native unzipping function built in to the operating system for files ending in .zip get the file sent to you in zip format and then extract to a folder on your hard drive c: from there install the program and you should be good I am unfamiliar with rar files and cannot advise bruce www.myremotegeek.com
There are more than one issue here. ZIP files are normally handled by windows and you don't need a third party software for them. Double-click a .zip file. It should open in a Windows window and offer a link to "extract all files". If it opens a third-party program, you have to reset the file association this way: right-click the file, point on "open with" and select "choose program"; select "compressed files", check the box "always use this program..." and click on OK. Try double-clicking again. RAR files are compressed files generated by WINRAR which is a third-party software not compatible with Windows. You may download a free trial version that works fine for a limited time but in the long run it is your money they want, hindering the free use.
