System Security malware removal?

I've checked through some old answers and have tried everything to no avail to get rid of System Security version 4.52.

I tried to access my control panel with add/remove programs, selected the system security icon and tried to remove it, and it indicated that the program was already removed. Yet when I restarted, the pop ups were still there (as well as the icon on the toolbar). I could only access the control panel in safe mode, but I can't seem to run the antivirus programs in safe mode.

I've downloaded free copies of several versions of anti-malware software, but SS will disable them. I am on the verge of throwing my computer out the window. I am not tech-saavy enough to deal with this!

I called the customer support # for spyware doctor and was told that their program would remove the virus (not the free dowloadable copy which the damn program keeps disabling before it would run).

When I called the store that carries spyware doctor (which I will not name because their sales associate really pissed me off- but it rhymes with "rest guy"), I was told they can't guarantee the program WILL work, and there are no refunds - but their geek squad can fix it for $200. Seriously?

So, does anyone know how to disable this stupid thing? As I've said, I've followed several links, tried several downloads - to no avail. If I can't disable it myself, does anyone know of an antivirus program that can (and will) remove it? I can't afford to waste money on software if it doesn't work, and I certainly can't afford to pay someone $200 to fix it.

So - any advice on how to disable and remove System Security 4.52?

Can anyone recommend an antivirus program that will?

Please respond ASAP - it won't even let me open Microsoft Word, and I need to access files for class!!!! Thanks in advance!

Personal Antivirus and System Security are themself Adware. It is NOT an antivirus program.

Re-boot your computer in SAFE MODE
To run it in Safe Mode, as soon as your computer turns on hit the F8 key (repeatedly) until a screen comes up
Choose Start computer in SAFE MODE with network support
Download and install Malware Bytes and AVAST

http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

Run a FULL SCAN with both programs – They are FREE.

WARNING - I had this virus and after I did everything above it came back in 3 days. Not sure if this works 100% but it's better than nothing

I doubt you're going to get anything fixed by class time.

The trick here might be to use Safe Mode With Networking to download and run anti-malware programs.

A second trick would be to give them a different name before running them. The malware is keying off something to disable the anti-malware, and the easiest to key off -- and to avoid -- is the file name. Just make sure you don't change the .exe part, or Windows won't know how to run it.

To get into Safe Mode with Networking:

1. Log out and reboot your machine.
2. When the machine starts the reboot sequence, press the F8 key repeatedly.
3. Select Safe Mode with Networking from the resulting menu.
4. Login. If the malware has changed your password, try logging in as Administrator. By default, Administrator has no password.
5. The machine will continue booting, but the Windows desktop will look different.
6. When you're finished doing what you need to do, log out and reboot back into normal mode.

Good luck.

If nothing works, try this guide:
1. Open My Computer, go to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ and look for a folder with the numeric name (e.g. 11480154). Inside it, there should be two lonely files, one of them with the numeric filename same as the name of the folder. Delete both files and the folder.
2. Restart Windows.
3. Go to Start, Run, type in MSCONFIG and click OK to launch Microsoft Configuration Utility. Navigate to Startup tab and look for the entry with the numeric name. Uncheck the box near it.
4. If there are entries pointing to C:\Program Files with "System Security" in the path, remove the checks from those boxes as well.
5. Right-click on My Computer. Go to System Restore. Check the box stating "Turn off System Restore". Windows will warn you about restore points being deleted. Click OK and restart.
6. Re-enable System Restore (by removing the checkmark from the box in #5).
Your antivirus program should be OK to open now, so use it to run a full system scan.

Try Ctrl+Alt+Deleteing and open task manager, go to the processes tab, and see if there are any processes that have System Security in them, ,SS or something like that. Click end process and that might stop the program, and you might have a better chance at removing it then.
