I am a wife and a mother. I have college credits. I have not yet talked to a recruiter (horrible at returning calls, I assume). I am going in tomorrow and I have yet taken the ASVAB.
Anyone with advice about the Navy? Starting pay (married with child)? Does the ASVAB determine what career I will be placed, or can I choose?

Asvab determines what jobs you are eligible for...
If you want family time, be mindful of what you sign up for.
For instance, jobs like military intelligence can often be done on shore, not out at sea. So, you have a better chance at getting more family time.
I signed up for the sub fleet and was always out at sea. I hated it.
First off, congrats on making the decision to serve your country.
The best advice I can give you is to be prepared for a long wait. The Navy is full up, with people finding themselves waiting 9-12 months from their enlistment date to ship to boot camp. I also hope you are not over 28 years old, because if so you will be ineligible for AD Navy.
Since you have dependents, you will receive allowances for housing while you are in boot camp and A-school depending on their ZIP code. Depending on how many college credits you have, you may enlist as an E-1 ($1,294.50 per month), E-2 ($1,568.70), or E-3 ($1,649.70).
The ASVAB eliminates jobs for which you are unqualified. After that, it all depends on the openings available. A job counselor at the Military Entry Processing Station (MEPS for short) will offer you some jobs and ship dates, and then you make the decision as to which one you will take, if any. Remember that you can say "No Deal", refuse the jobs they offer you, and come back to MEPS another time.
This is where I took my practice test for the asvab. If you type in asvab practice test into a search engine it will give you a lot of links to practice tests. The more quizes you take the more comfortable you will be when you take the asvab at meps. This is where I took my practice tests for the asvab. I got an 88 studying with these for a few days.
