why are the drawers in a refrigerator called crispers?

my grandmother always has called the two drawers in the bottom of the fridge crispers, and i dont know why.

there is enuff of a 'seal' between the drawer and it's tracks and lid that the air that is circulated around in the fridge (which dries things out) cannot get into the drawer much.... therefore, things in that drawer will not dry out as fast and remain 'crisp' rather than 'wilted'.....
