v2000 memory upgrade number of sticks?

my friend and i are trying to upgrade his memory ,he bought a single 1 gig stick from office despot and when we put it in we get nothing ,the machine shows 384 on board now which leads me to believe it has a 256 and a128 - we have switched it twice and as soon as we go back to old mem it does fine (slow as always but ok) does it require equal amounts or could new memory be bad

You don't say what type of memory you bought. Verify that you got a PC2700 DDR SDRAM SODIMM 1GB stick. If so, then it is possible that memory is bad. The V2000 support up to 1GB for total of 2GB memory.

If it's an older machine the mother board may not be able to handle that much room. Also is the new RAM compatible with his computer.
