what cat said ....also check your controls, some have a button that disconnects the shifter so you can rev the motor up in neutral (others have a lever) if you have a button, make sure its not stuck in 'neutral'. You can start and rev all day but get no shifting action.

hi there... what motor is it.. how old is it... has this just happened or have you just got the motor....
Basics...... does the engine rev when you push forwards on the throttle or when you twist the the throttle. Is it a tiller.. if so you have to manually push the motor into gear at slow idle speed. If its a control model, dual or single. If dual make sure when motor is running at idle you push one lever forwards... the one that doesnt make the engine rev...... you will hear a clunk noise and it will be in gear .. move the throttle lever slowly forwards and you should increas speed...
if its a single lever.... without starting the motor push the lever forwards and see if the cable moves.. there will be two cables one goes to the carb the other to a linkage arm for putting the outboard in gear.
More basics... out of the water key OUT of the start ignition ... look at the propellor... grab it and turn it. both ways does it move easily ... does it spin arround and the big nut in the middle spin too. ... Ok now Just push the throttle lever forwards... and the gear change lever if you have two.... DONT START THE MOTOR KEEP KEY WELL OUT OF THE BOAT!!.... go back to the prop turn it . it should only tun one way and be a little stiff .... It should not turn in the oppossite direction. If it does thne you have a need a shear pin for the prop... easy fix undo the big nut pull off the prop and take it to the boat store ask for a shear pin for it. tell them make hp and model number of the motor....
Its easy to fi and you will see on the drive shaft where it fits.
Ok if its a little stiff then you may have a spun hub... in the miidle of the propellor you will see that the hub...( hole) ring is connected to the blades by a thick rubber ring. These can deteriorate and be damaged. The function is to protected the propshaft and the motor from damage if the prop hits a hard object.. Take the prop to marina and they will test it for you and tell you if its ok.. They can repair them too..
Ok if all thats ok.. and you still are not getting power it may e a problem in the lower unit... bad gears ... no gear oil .. or the shift linkage is loose. You need a workshop manual to help you with this.
Please email me a pic of you motor ... including a pic of the propellor and I will try to help...

Are you engaging the transmission when you push the throttle down? Because otherwise you aren't going to go anywhere(it is the little, generally red, button underneath the throttle).

The prop hub is 'spun', or if it has a shear pin, the pin is broken. Mount up a new prop. Or the lower unit gears are stripped or shift linkage is broken and stuck in neutral.
