I currently have linoleum in my kitchen. Underneath is some plastic surface. Do I pull everything out? Do I need to use a backerboard? I found another backboard alternative at Home Depot that's thin, light and rolls out bit more expensive. Anybody have experience with this?

I am not familiar with any underlay that is light and rolls out. To be done right I always tear out down to the subfloor add backerboard and lay tile on it. I want a nice firm backer for my tile jobs so the floor does not flex and crack my grout lines or my tile.I hope this Helps and good luck with your project.

yes there is an underlay that you ROLL out , it is called DITRA , made by SHLUTER, there are a few other companies that make similar products.
the best part of these products is that all you have to do to prepare the old floor is -you simply clean and nail your old LINO etc, then you cut the ditra to fit, roll half back glue it down (with the proper mortar )press down firmly, repeat to the other half , continue.
now you have a perfect underlay for tile
