Copyrighted novel ideas?

I'm writing a novel for children and I have a copyright concern. And it's common knowledge that there is no original novel idea.

i was wondering what copyright covered.

Does it copyright ideas, characters, themes and stuff? Names, locations, and concepts?

Could someone please help explain it because I can't understand it.

Copyright does NOT protect ideas. Copyright protects works of authorship, such as writings, music, and works of art that have been tangibly expressed.
