I am trying to work with a weimaraner. Whenever you pet him he gets so excited he won't sit still.?

He is so cute. I am just wondering if there are some tricks to help him be calm so he can be pet. He thinks he is the size of a lap dog and tries to crawl on your lap.

How old is he? Give him a lot of exercise - this breed needs a TON of exercise. Do some training to exercise his mind. And if he's a puppy, you can expect him to be like this - work with him, take him to classes.

Mine used to do that too! he's 10 months and 60 pounds. it's just how the breed is. high energy! having him sit and stay really helps. if it runs up to you and wants attention, but won't hold still ignore him. don't look him in the eye. he will stop and wait. tell him to sit. after he sits for a few seconds say good, but do not touch him. after he stays through that you can say good again and pet him. make him listen! mine is so stubborn sometimes! I have to let him know I'm in charge, not him.

Excitement is weak energy, nervous, anxious energy, so you don't need to encourage that. Instead of petting him, lead walk him, do some training, get him thinking and working, with little or no talking, looking or touching which will build his self confidence and reduce the anxiety

I had a lap Dane that would sit in your lap.

I have a Dal X & she is so super hyper she gets really excited too. I think it is just her personality. She doesn't learn fast & I really feel mine is a bit demented. Between over breeding due to "101 Dalmatians" & poor breeding tactics & ignorance has produced some very poor quality dogs.
