Is there a "generic" tank for a motorcycle?

I have an '87 Yamaha Midnight Maxim bike, but can't find a replacement tank. How do figure out whether a different tank would fit?

bikebandit has tanks their drawings, but they don't have tanks available for the maxims.

There are several Maxim tanks available on ebay, but none specifically for the '87.

The best info for interchangeability will likely come from Yamaha mechanics. I'd go to the shop and ask them.

No there is no generic tank since almost all tank fittings are different per model size and year of bike. You can try two methods to replace the tank. The first is the most challenging, and involves just buying a tank, and having it modified to fit your year ride. The second is just to have one fabricated by a local shop. Neither one will be cheap. Your only other option is to wait until finding one for your year/ model. Good luck. Since the bike is over 10 years old the manufacturer is not required to make any parts for it. I had to do this dance with my '84 Honda V30 Magna when I dented the tank earlier this year. I did hit up craigslist, and found one guy with a tank for my year, but it was sold before I contacted him. If you try that route be ready to get there quick to pick it up. Hope this helps.

www.bikebandit.com has a tank for an '86 SC700 Maxim. No listing for an '87.
