impossible- there is not one key that is embedded into one disc (unless it is a custom manufacturer disc). A regular Windows disc that is sold has the product key on a separate sheet of "paper".
OK, make sure your computer meet the system requirements before you buy the license; note that the system requirements are only to run windows xp but you need a better processor, ram and hard disk. also, search for xp drivers for your hardware; if there are no drivers, you are better off buying a new system.
another thing; your windows 98 key will not work with XP, you need a new key for your machine. You can buy for as low as $86.00 here: http://www.softwaremedia.com/category/908.html?ovchn=NXT&ovcrn=N09-02215-OEM&ovtac=CMP&ovcpn=windows-xp-home-with-sp3-oem Good luck!
Your brother's key is registered to the fingerprint of his hardware, so it won't activate your hardware (without deactivating his, if you call Microsoft). You need your own key. (The key isn't on the CD - it's just a numerically valid key for XP. Any valid key will work with any CD.)
download off microsoft.com get or search in google windows xp 2 or 3 whichever one your computer can handle its probably not working because the windows xp ur bro has is only one use on one computer so it doesnt work on yours but if it says you can use it for up to 3 computers lik my microsoft word cd then you should just call the company or try again if it doesnt work
