I am throwing a small surprise birthday party for one of my friends. There will only be 20 people attending including the birthday girl. Somebody else will take care of drinks and the cake, but I'll make the meal. I need suggestions, because I am drawing a complete blank on what to make. Difficulty level isn't an issue, I cook fairly well. I'm thinking some kind of appetizer, maybe a soup and salad, a main dish, and perhaps some appetizers to go around while people mingle. The party is at night, mid october. We have a lit gazebo, so I think we'll be eating outside. If possible, I would love suggestions for something season appropriate.

the possibilities are endless, it all depends on party...is it a low key chill vibe or swanky upscale party. what is your budget?
if its a girl, i like to go all SATC with a cute signature drink, since october can be chilly, maybe a cute alcoholic hot chocolate beverage, or something with apple cider
this is a sample menu:
*appetizers- stuffed mushroom caps, vegetable crudite, cheese and grapes, something with pumpkin, little halloween cookies and candies for fun, *soup- butternut squash soup *salad- spinach greens with carmelized walnuts, apples, and smoked bacon with a low fat dressing *main dish- lasagna with eggplant or fried eggplant, baked chicken and pasta, chicken cordon bleu, ham with scalloped potatoes, lobster stew, shrimp scampi, hearty beef stew,
I threw my sisters 50th party last year so I know all about wanting the right food. Some of the stuff that went down well at the party were : ---- mini quiches ---- dumplings ---- sushi ---- bruschetta with different toppings I found if you draw from other cuisines you get a lot more variates and people are generally more interested and more impressed. Hope this helps!
Salad: Caesar or Garden salad (tossed with some seasonal fruits and vegetables) Main Course: Pot roast, Backed Turkey, Grilled Chicken, Mashed Potatoes, Mixed Veggies, Red - Pepper Rice (simple and easy e-mail me for recipe), Side dish marinara pasta, Soft dinner rolls or garlic bread, Pumpkin, Squash, Baked sweet potatoes etc.
Appetizers: Jalapeno Stuffers, Mini Quiche, Turnovers, Vegetable platter, Nuts, Hummus, Bobaganuche (with pita bread or chips)( Bobaganuche - not sure if spelled right, but is basically eggplant stuffed with garlic grilled and softened, then squashed up with a few tomatoes, onion and garlic and makes and amazing dip with things such as pita bread. again if wanted e-mail me for recipe).
