Obama hasn't accomplished anything worthy of winning the Nobel Peace Prize. It was awarded to him based on his promises to do the right thing for the United States of America, Home of the brave, Home of the free. So the most charitable thing he can do with that $1.4 million prize money is to pay back some of the American debt he helped create. Charity begins at Home. Yeh, like that's going to happen! Even though Bush became too despised to possibly win the Peace Prize, he atleast DID accomplish SOMEthing positive. "Because of Bush, Saddam’s regime no longer inflicts torture on Iraqis by having electric prods attached to their genitals or by giving them acid baths. It no longer drills holes in their ankles and skulls. It no longer leaves them naked in refrigerators for days. It no longer cuts out their tongues and cuts off their ears. Nor does it force Iraqi men to watch gang rapes of their wives and sisters. Because of Bush, Afghan women can now attend school. They are free to go out in public without being accompanied by a man. They are allowed to hold jobs. Moreover, because of the $15 billion Bush sent to combat AIDS, deaths in Africa are down dramatically. For that reason, despite claims that America’s moral standing in the world has eroded, Bush’s approval rating in African countries has stood at 80 percent or higher".
nominations take place in Feb. and a list is created in March of the candidates assessment. From March to August a board reviews the list but "do not directly evaluate nominations nor give explicit recommendations."
That means that he was essentially given the nobel prize based on his first month in office and a lot of months of kool aid drinking.
Don't worry, Al Gore was a potential candidate for the nobel peace prize
The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 is to be awarded to President Barack Obama for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples. The Committee has attached special importance to Obama's vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons.
Obama has as President created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play. Dialogue and negotiations are preferred as instruments for resolving even the most difficult international conflicts. The vision of a world free from nuclear arms has powerfully stimulated disarmament and arms control negotiations. Thanks to Obama's initiative, the USA is now playing a more constructive role in meeting the great climatic challenges the world is confronting. Democracy and human rights are to be strengthened.
Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future. His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population.
For 108 years, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has sought to stimulate precisely that international policy and those attitudes for which Obama is now the world's leading spokesman. The Committee endorses Obama's appeal that "Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility for a global response to global challenges."
Everyone wants to be all 'we are such awesome people because we elected a black president'. Forgetting, of course, that the only reason they ELECTED him was because he was black. So they want to give the First Black President a Nobel Peace Prize.
President Barack Obama won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples," the Norwegian Nobel Committee said, citing his outreach to the Muslim world and attempts to curb nuclear proliferation.
