Sony e-book reader can support Microsoft Word files, as you can see in the technical details section here:

However, I'll suggest you to have the Amazon Kindle if you're considering to buy an ebook reader. Not only the Kindle can read Word document, but also it can give you much wider selection of content. I remember I read these reviews when I decided to get my Kindle 2:

And in case you don't know, Amazon has put a price slash on the Kindle 2 and it is now $100 cheaper than the price I got mine. So it is definitely a better buy.
Hope it helps :)

With eBooks, like digital music, you need to think about not only the device you use, but how the content is purchased, delivered and managed. This is why iPods are the standard for music. There are lots of fine mp3 players out there, but Apple paired iPods up with ITunes, which made shopping, buying, and delivering music easy, as well as managing your iPod. Amazon has essentially set up a similar system with the Kindle. Sony hasn't. I've heard nothing but good things about Sony eReaders, but they're still only half the system.

I think many ebook readers support Word document. Hm... but will you consider the Amazon Kindle?
Here is a review about it, written by a person who is a writer as well:
