It is safe to keep your system up 24hrs. Many people and businesses do. I would make sure the laptop would have good ventilation - nothing blocking air vents below or on side. Overheating would be my only worry.
Computer components are designed to have a certain reasonable life. Manufaturers measure average life by Mean Time between Failure (MTBF). It would follow that leaving a machine on 24 hrs is 3 times more use than 8 hrs a day...but the MTBF is an average. Given two identical machines coming out of the assembly line one day, one could fail two days after you buy it and the other last for years and years.
So theoretically 24hr operation could shorten the life of some components, but not really significantly.
The convenience of leaving it on until it downloads your files outweighs the risks. I leave my server on 24hrs for that purpose too.

yes , I've tried torrenting on multiple laptops for over 24 hours. you will do fine. Good luck with torrenting. I suggest Transmission for fastest torrenting. Safest too.

no it will just overheat in the long run if you don't have a good cooling system and that includes good airflow from the intake vents across the motherboard to the exhaust vents where the fan is at

It should be ok to have it on for 24hrs a day. You see servers are running generally days or even years.
Buy, hey, why don't you try other ways to get what you r downloading?

IMO, you should NEVER run a laptop 24/7 as they arn't to good for air circulation, that being said you could go out and get a cooling mat for them, you could also stash it in a cool room...
I dont recommend it but I know people that do, do it....
