The word "carotid" is derived from the Greek word, karos, meaning deep sleep. I presume this is because if someone - a martial arts specialist, for example - puts pressure on the carotid artery, it causes fainting due to deprivation of blood and oxygen to the brain.
The carotid arteries, of course, are the two major arteries in the neck that supply blood to the head.
