We are not looking for the least expensive per say, we are interested in investing a reasonable amount of money, without going overboard, yet have the stick/head combination be a good choice for a novice.

Go with the STX AV8 and the Al6000 head/shaft combo. Sometimes they come together in stores. Its one of the cheapest sticks but its pretty good quality. the AV8 is a sturdy head that's not too heavy and is good for beginners. The AL6000 shaft is just a regular aluminum shaft. It's a good stick for beginners.
