Questions regarding the PS3?

Alright, a few questions.

1. I have a 720p 50" LCD TV. It's a few years old, and I'm not looking to upgrade, so let's not mess around with that. I'm obviously not going to get the full effect of 1080p video... I have acknowledged this and moved onward. However, would the difference from standard DVD to BluRay be substantial on even a 720p display? 

2. The PS3 has 7.1 surround sound. This is awesome. I have a 7.1 setup that's never been properly used because we've never had a BluRay player, or anything that handles 7.1 before. Question 2, part 1: How AWESOME is that going to sound while playing games and movies? Question 2, part 2: To get the full audio effect, should I use the digital-optical sound output, or the HDMI sound output?

3. The PS3 has the capability of downloading and streaming movies. Does this include BluRay movies? If this is a stupid question, is the quality degraded in any way by downloading them instead of having the DVD? Also, how much is the movie service? Is it a monthly charge, or just a flat charge per movie?

I already own an Xbox360, so don't get all up in my face about that.

1.  Yes.  720p is still a very good picture.  Sometimes, you actually see MORE detail with 720p versus 1080p.  Also, sports that use a ball look much, much better on 720p versus 1080p.

2.  It will be excellent.  Even better is the firmware updates can add future surround sound formats.  Use the HDMI if your A/V receiver transmits sound via HDMI.

3.  There is not a single streamed movie in the world that will compare to Blu-Ray.  The physical format will always provide more detail and better picture quality than the streamed version.  This is especially true for Blu-Ray because these discs are capable of holding up to 50 GB worth of data, meaning you can put more uncompressed stuff and uncompressed data means quality increases.  Good luck trying to stream that with a reasonable size in an attempt to match Blu-Ray.  I dunno how much Netflix charges to stream on the PS3, if they even charge at all.  The PSN video store charges you for each movie.  You can either rent the download for a day or you can acutally purchase it to own.  Most of the new stuff give you both an HD and SD option.  Some of the older titles are SD only.  Includes both movies and TV shows.  The PSN video store also has a very good selection of both; it is supported by all the major movie distributors and most TV networks.

The PS3 will upconvert your DVDs to 720p resolution.  
Most PS3 games have a native resolution of 720p, so you won't miss a whole lot by not having 1080.

PS3 games work on both the normal and the slim, there aren't different games for either.
