PS3 with HDMI issues?

My anger knows no limits now that my PS3 has arrived.

I have an HDMI cable hooked up. It's a half-year-old Monster HDMI cable running from the brand new PS3 to a half-year-old Onkyo 7.1 surround sound system.

The video? Clear, pretty, sharp. The audio? Wouldn't know, it's NOT THERE.

I have tried every God damn thing I can think of to get this audio to work. I've tried multiple different codec combination, different output options, and different cables. I even ran an optical cable to it, and it worked. But I DON'T WANT 5.1 SOUND. I have 7.1 and I want to actually HEAR 7.1

Can anyone tell me what the hell is this thing's problem?

Sounds almost identical to my set up. I have an Onkyo receiver as well. I had an issue at one time with my U-Verse box not able to transmit 5.1 over HDMI (they have fixed it since). In order to get my video over HDMI and audio over optical I had to change a setting on the receiver itself (on the front panel, not through the on-screen menu). Since optical worked but not HDMI maybe that has something to do with it. It has something to do with selecting some digital setting. I can check more when I get home and update.

You may also want to go straight from the PS3 to your TV just to make sure there isn't a problem with the PS3 transmitting audio over HDMI (just for testing).

PS - How many games actually have 7.1 audio? Of course some blu-ray movies have it.

Update - It is the Digital Input button on the front of mine. Make sure HDMI is selected. If COAXx/OPTx is selected the manual says "Any audio signals present at the HDMI inputs will not beoutput."

I hope this fixes your problem.
