Should Congress vote a pay cut for all government employees?

If our government is serious about balancing the budget, shouldn't congress set an example by voting an across the board pay cut for all employees? After all, they are voting the tax payers a pay cut every time they spend money we don't have.

In times of economic difficulty, the cost of government should be decreased, not increased.

People in the private sector are not only getting reduced salaries but also losing their jobs. But government employees think that they always have to have a raise and an increase in benefits.

Also, some goverment departments are overstaffed.

Salaries and benefits are the greatest costs of goverment, and an effort should be made to keep them down. The salaries of the highest paid government employees should also be regularly published for the public to see.

No just pols, other government workers that actually serve their country (election workers, US attorneys, DHS agents, sailors etc) should actually be better compensated.
