if its a high school thing most beginners are joining so they should teach you. but some basics are right shoulder, drop spins, and 45 degree tosses. look them up on youtube :) If its more advanced you should come with a flag bag and color guard gloves

They will probably show you, but if it is a real try-out i'm sure it would definitely help to know things ahead of time and practice. There are probably youtubes and websites that will show you how
