Both of these wars are lost. 'Surges' alone are useless because they're only a conventional military fart in a political, social, economic, religious and power play whirlwind. Politically Barack had no choice but to send more troops. No troops and the right would have raked him over the coals without mercy. If he didn't set a date for withdrawal everyone else would have been all over him. That lack of choice in troop levels is a part of the republican plan to regain power by opposing this administration at any cost to our country. Lack of a date for withdrawal would have upset democrats...democrats he needs in 2012. Overall the US has grabbed onto a Tar Baby and there's no good way to get loose and still look good in any ones eyes. Barack has to very carefully thread this needle. As in Vietnam at some point the last helicopter will take off leaving a large chunk of real estate exactly as it was before we arrived on the scene. Conventional warfare died in the late 20th century. If after eight years in Afghanistan and slightly less in Iraq our bloated 800 billion borrowed dollar military is still stuck on page one, relying on bribes and payoffs to warlords and thieves to even look as if they have any kind of control. If we sent no troops and got out tomorrow the end game would be the same as sending a million troops for a decade...it's their turf...they win...we lose! Give it a think!
