I need to buy a new Vacuum and need some input please?

My Bissell finally died. I used to love Bissell but that was the worst vacuum I had ever bought. I am looking at canister vacuums now. I see the Kenmore has a high rating as well as the Electrolux and the Miele. I want something that will last and has low noise and cleans carpets wonderfully. Any knowledgeable vacuumers out there?

Everybody was wonderful to answer and I thank you. My upright kept falling on me, the hose was too short, I had to empty the dirt cannister at least 3 times when vacuuming and I hated to clean the filters, yuck! Besides it was heavy to lift over the threshold. That is the reason I really want to try a canister again with a bag. Still undecided but you nice people have given me much to think about and try out.

Hi, it depends on what sort of vacuum cleaner you like to use (Uprights, cylinder or even wet & dry cleaners)? & what sort of floor you have, carpet or hard floor? the cylinder's are better for hard floors & the uprights are better for carpets.? We have been repairing vacuum cleaners of over 30 years now & we think the best cylinder cleaners are miele very good suction also built very well & for the uprights the sebo cleaners are very very good, quiet, reliable, good suction power & robustly built. Both are not the cheapest cleaner on the market but you pay for what you get!
& both products are made in Germany, they do know how to make good products!

I have a Kenmore Canister with a HEPA filter & I love it! I don't need to worry about finding the right replacement bags ever again, & I just rinse out the canister (not the filter though) with water to clean it. I also like that I empty the canister more often than I would replace a bag in a regular upright, so in my mind, it's a little cleaner :) Dyson's seem like an amazing vacuum as well, but has a price tag thats out of my range.

I likewise strongly prefer the upright vacuums rather than the canister vacuums. Much-much easier to use -- rather than having to "pull" a canister all over the place and try not to hit your furniture. Insofar as brands are concerned, I have 2 Dysons right now ... one for upstairs and one for downstairs. They are absolutely the best vacuum cleaners I have ever had. Have had them for about 3+ years now, and if something goes wrong with them, I would buy Dyson again.

I am not up to date with the new canister models, but have always liked the quality and quietness of the Electrolux models. If you get something like a Hoover upright, you can also buy one of those extra long extra flexible extension hoses and have the advantages of both a canister and an upright in one.

Myself I like the uprights. They put a little more weight on the carpet and picks up more dirt. Also it has a dirt bag that I can check how dirty my floor is. I vacuum up to three times a day. I has been picking up the dirt the old canister vac did not pick up
