I was wondering, do you vegetarians/vegans that own pets e.g dogs or cats, do you feed your pets meat? or do you make your pets be vegetarian/vegan like you?
Thanks :)
I'm vegetarian too and I was just wondering what you guys do.

When i went Vegan so did my Pit Bull - First i was ordering this Vegetarian dog food called V-Dog i had to order it online cuz i could not find it in stores near me. But then i PetsMart i found this one called AvoDerm and he seems to really like it. And since i switched him to Vegetarian dog food he does not have Gas like he used too.
The way i figure it. if a vegan feeds there Pet Meat or Dog/Cat food with Meat in it. Even tho they are not eating it there selves, They are still in support of the meat industry since they are buying it still.
**Edit** This is what my Dog eats http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2750275
From an evolutionary standpoint, cats and dogs bodies are designed to eat and digest meat. I am a vegetarian but because of this, I think it is ok to feed them meat. Cats and dogs have sharp teeth that are meant for chewing meat. Humans on the other hand have very flat herbivore teeth. Evolutionarily, humans did not eat much meat because it was not practical. If meat was eaten, it was likely because no plants were available and the animal was already dead.
Also I've never seen any evidence or studies that show feeding your pet a vegetarian diet will add healthy years to their life.
I have a cat that I got before I went vegetarian. When I did decide to become a vegetarian I continued to feed him cat food. Now I've moved out and he lives with my parents and their cat, and if I decided to get another pet I'd probably get a more vegetarian-friendly one.
I know that there are vegan food for both cats and dogs, but I still wouldn't feed them that. Cats are carnivours and can't survive and be healthy without meat. Dogs can be fine without meat (and some wild ones won't eat it), but I wouldn't feed my dog a vegetarian diet unless a veterinarian told me it was okay.
You are an individual who is accountable for your choices. Ancient metaphor and myth does not absolve the contemporary human from doing what is compassionate, regardless of personal inconvenience. There is no human nature; there is only human behavior, and you can change yours at any given time or place of your choosing. Live in joy and peace and please save the Animals…all of us.
Look into the history of our forefathers. Human fought for survival. They killed for safety. Those poor and the weak one were enslaved for a piece of bread. Child labor, human slavery and sexism were permitted at one time. Even the Bible does not accentuate what kind of food shall a master feed his/her human slaves, right? But today, slavery is outlawed.
What is the moral dilemma of pets. Pampered or enslaved? This essay discusses whether the practice of keeping pets, defined as a class of animals existing for human purposes, is morally acceptable. Clouding the issue is the claim that humans have always had pets. Selected historical examples show that this is not the case. Instead, the doctrine of human supremacy has meant that close relationships with animals have often been ideologically impossible. Today, however, increasing knowledge about animals’ intellectual and emotional capacities blurs the once-distinct boundary between humans and other animals. Given this knowledge, treatment of animals must also be reassessed. In particular, the essay argues that animals have the basic right not to be treated as the property of others. Although a world without pets is unpleasant to consider, the perpetuation of our pleasure is not sufficient reason to enslave other animals.
To prevent the “ippocratic” criticism by the “strangers”, it’s better for you to claim as a vegan. Vegans do not keep pets, but they do not hate animals. A vegan can still adopt an orphaned or abandon pets, if a vegan's INTENTION TO KEEP PETS IS PURELY ON SELFLESS REASON. You may give them life too by feeding them the portion of the same food that you eat. You’re still a valid vegan. It applies to the human too. You can feed the non-vegetarian orphan children with vegan food. I'm doing that!
I don't have any pets but I just wanted to say, because I know a lot of people are posting they feed their pets meat because you "have" to:
It has been scientifically proven that dogs can live as long on a vegan diet as eating meat... It hasn't been similarly proven about cats yet, I don't think; however, I know a lot of vegans with both cats and dogs. Most of them feed their pets vegan diets, and they all lead perfectly healthy and long lives. So I don't know what all the hype is about.
