"The Canterbury Tales"?

I am researching the political and social context of the role of the poet in "The Canterbury Tales. Chaucer frames the role of a poet in the prologue to the Tale of Sir Topas. Any suggestions as to where I can research? I have looked all over online databases and have been unsuccessful. Maybe you have some ideas on the role of the poet? Let me know if you have anything.

If the links below aren't enough, just do what I did: type "Canterbury Tales" into Google's search engine. www.wikipedia.org is also a good place to begin your research on this, or just about any other topic. Be seeing you!

Geoffrey Chaucer likely wrote The Canterbury Tales in the late 1380s and early 1390s, after his retirement from life as a civil servant.
