R&P: Let's decide -- What are the best songs of 2009 (Round 1 - Part 3)?
Welcome, to the next installment of the First Annual Rock & Pop Best Song Competition (2009 Edition). You, the community here at Yahoo! Answers, nominated 350+ songs, your favorites of the year, to face-off in head-to-head battles, tournament style, to determine the best songs of this calendar year.
I do ask that you listen to all of the songs... don't vote on name alone. Listen to them, weigh them, and then choose with reason, which song is the better of the two in the given match ups.
Please star this early and often, e-mail your friends and let them know this is happening. E-mail strangers and enemies too, if you think they might be interested. I want to get as many votes as we can... make this a true R&P event. Let me know if you have trouble with the last.fm or youtube links and I'll get on them ASAP.
MATCH UP 1
"Stone Cold Metal" - Ensiferum
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cO4QqaoFuso
Finnish heavy metal, whose name translates to "sword bearer." Epic, sweeping pictures are painted of heroic deeds, ancient in nature, sometimes related to the Norse gods.
VERSUS
"Dark Horse" - Converge
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Asam2mLd5S0
math metal in the vein of Isis, Dillinger Escape Plan and the like. This album has had praise heaped up upon it. The technical proficiency and progressive tendencies are impressive, but can a Massachusettes metal band possibly beat the ice giants of Norway?
MATCH UP 2
"Two Weeks" - Grizzly Bear
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjecYugTbIQ
creepy video aside, "Two Weeks" is Veckatimest's most immediate song. Lush arrangements and harmonies, a beautiful melody.
VERSUS
"Coast of Carolina" - Telekinesis
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oO1O9NkJW74
Seattle nostalgic indie rock.
MATCH UP 3
"My Girls" - Animal Collective
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zol2MJf6XNE
Votes seemed to be split between Summertime Clothes and My Girls -- had people clearly loved one more than the other, the winner would have been the top seed in this competition, by far. My Girls is catchy, with a harmony that hearkens back to Brian Wilson. Drawing from world music, the Beach Boys, and electronica equally, and yet making a beautiful, cohesive whole with possible crossover appeal is an impressive feat.
VERSUS
"When They Fight, They Fight" - Generationals
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6LFlBfSnpzQ
There's an interesting 50'-60s pop group vibe to this, and the throwback production quality only underlines that feeling. Indie pop with sugar on top.
MATCH UP 4
"The Fear" - Lily Allen
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-wGMlSuX_c
Does anyone think this might actually be the last we hear of Lily Allen? There was "retirement" talk when her last album came out.
VERSUS
"The Strangers" - St. Vincent
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQ3jUjFtG80
a disintegrating relationship, pulling our heroine down with it. And an experiment in textures detailing her fight below the surface.
MATCH UP 5
"Peeled Apples" - Manic Street Preachers
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DCB7bTGcFo
The words are that of their long dead front man...
VERSUS
"Dive" - B'z
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-N5EjFjeOk
The biggest band from Japan. These guys have been around since the 80s over there.
