I hate adverts, I want to block them, there must be a signal that contains a unique pattern, a clever circuit could detect, and blank my screen or mute my speakers. How dare they put adverts on MY tv.

Not easily. There are no hidden signals consumers have access to.
Your best bet is to record everything and skip the commercials on playback, or watch channels that are commercial free to begin with.

only way to do it is to use a hd box to record live tv and watch it a few mins late, then you can skip through ads.
