Do tetra fish lose their color when alone in a tank?

or with fish that are a different species?

Yes. They usually live in schools and have brighter colors when with others of their species. However I have a rummy-nosed tetra by itself (the others of its school ending up dying while my brother was watching them.) in a tank with other species, and he is brighter now than ever.

Yes, they get stressed out. Tetras find safety in numbers.
