The islands are the result of a stationary mantle plume, also known as a Hot Spot.
The crust is oceanic, and because of its thinness the magma can puncture it and form islands on the Earth's surface when the magma has cooled.
There's a chain of islands because of continental drift - the oceanic plate is moving slowly, and so as it moves, the part of it above the hot spot slowly changes, leaving a chain of islands.
