How many more cysts should I expect?

Well last month I found a small lump on Lui's head. I had no idea what it was and all sorts of thoughts were going through my mind so I rang the vet and got him in the next day. It was just a small sebaceous cyst that the vet said wasn't a worry but she'd remove if it didn't go away on its own. Panic over, I watched it for the next few days then another one, much bigger, appeared on his back. Since it was bigger, went to the vet again and she said it was the same thing, and she'd only remove it if he wasn't showing or if it didn't start to go away on its own. She also checked the one on his head again, which had popped (on its own) and just cleaned it up.

Long story short, she said chances are he will get more, and I was wondering if anyone else had experienced them and can tell me how often they come up etc.

I know they're not a big deal, even the vet said so, but I'd just like to keep an eye on them, for my reassurance and also the fact that he's just turned 10 and is not a young dog anymore (though apparently no-one has told him that.

Thanks a lot. The vet bills weren't too bad, first visit was around $40 (NZD) then the next one was considered a follow-up so was only about $20. But, now I'm not worried about them, it's hopefully the last trip for a while.

As for the lumps, thanks for that idea. They really don't seem to bother him but if they do I'll try that. Lui's go away quickly too, as the second one popped up only a few days after the first and by then the first had burst and was gone, so thanks for that idea, reassures me a little.

I know how it feels to panic over sebaceous cysts! My boy had one between the shoulder blades and it when I found it it sent me into blind panic! Especially as Bernese are so prone to cancers. Anyway long story short, one vet bill and a removal later, he had a few over his lifetime - they popped up and became a little bit more frequent as he got older but they never seemed to cause him any particular bother. I also have a cat that gets them frequently under her chin, and I have had them on my ears before! Must be something in the water.. Haha.

You may find Lui will have them every few months, but I think it's always wise to get lumps and bumps checked out, in case it's anything more serious than a sebaceous cyst. He may never have another one again, but I sincerely doubt that they're causing him any discomfort or pain, and hopefully he'll remain a picture of health for many more years!

Ahhh yes our male sometimes gets them in the lower back or his legs. Went to the vet same as you and they said they weren't big enough to remove and we should wait a few days. They go within 7 days and pop up every few months either one at a time or in two's. At first i was really concerned and uncomfortable with the fact they would just pop up! To me it suggested ill health but if anything the vet said since his body gets rid of them so quickly he is in good health. Last one was 4 days ago >> gone now and before that was in the summer. We feed him a good diet and so on, when they come up sometimes his skin in that area feels hot so we put a cold wet flannel on the area and aloe vera gel to stop swelling and generally soothe and calm the skin:)

Vets usually know best. Is the dog in constant pain? If so, I would take action. If not, dont worry. The vet bills must be a hassle though. Best of Luck!!!
